Gowns Hurricanes and Faire
OK...So we finally got caught up with the numerous gowns and hats and other odds and ends that have occurred since Katrina hit. And we even have squeezed in a bit of time for a sword cloak. We have mostly managed to take care of things that needed taking care of in our personal life. Though not everything. And we are planning on our trip to see Lady Cynthia and Sir Black Fox at the Maryland Renaissance Faire next weekend.
So we are almost starting to relax a bit, friends and family from New Orleans are safe. We are happy.
And yet! Another storm comes our way! They are going to run out of names if this keeps up! Argh!
Our List Of Good Things To Do During A Hurricane....
1. Sit on the doorsteps and wait till the thunder and lightening get too close and run into the house. (This can be repeated over and over again for our entertainment).
2. Sit on the door steps and wait for the power company to turn our electric on.
3. Sit on the door steps and wait for a neighborhood dog to come by and pet it.
4. Sit on the doorstep and practice the Florida Power and Light cheer. (OK you actually have to stand up for the cheer)
5. Sit on the door step and drink coffee.
6. Sit on the door step and drink warm soda.
7. Sit on the door step and drink Jack Daniels
8. Go inside the house and get a pillow so the steps don't make our butts sore.
9. Sit on the door step and say things like "It's amazing how the rest of the neighborhood has electricity except for our block.
10. Sit on the door step and wonder if wearing an aluminum foil helmet and swords above our head would actually get us hit by lightning, because we are now so bored it seems like fun.
11. Sit on the doorstep and try not to notice how bad everyone smells from the heat, while wondering if we stink too.
12. Sit on the doorstep and try to find out from neighbors if anyone knows which store might have gotten an ice delivery.
13. Sit on the doorstep and try to remember what exactly it was that you were supposed to be doing for the day, and forget what you were thinking about, but having more Jack Daniels anyway.
14. Sitting on the doorstep and going really wild and mixing our booze, by switching over to Jim Beam.

The Interdictor
This is a blog from New Orleans that started on Saturday August 27. It is facinating reading. I have read the entire blog. Further there is a live feed camera that these people have managed through out the Katrina and the aftermath. Absoutly amazing. And thanks to Brandon for sending the information.

Katrina
Well we have electricity! It took quite a few days. Our little portion of the grid shorted out, again, and did not come on for two more days. So Jim and I sat on the steps where it was cooler than in the house. The block I live on always shorts out. People were getting very cranky and it was harder to sleep due to the added noise of traffic from the people attending the VMAs. But on the cover of the local newspaper was a picture of someone who had no electricity, her house was flooded past her ankles, so I showed them the picture and told them "Hey that could be you!". She doesn't have electricity either. But all her stuff is ruined and we are dry....Well except for our arm pits. And we have water.
We had been out since Thursday at about 7 at night. On Saturday night trucks came by, and my neighbor who was sitting in her car to get an airconditioner break was yelling my name. I came running over. But, it was just city guys checking on the street lights. So no electricity.
Waiting on the steps seemed kind of dumb. The idea was to hopefully flag down a Florida Power and Light crew. It seemed stupid, but almost productive, as if doing this would help some how. Then on Sunday two women from the company showed up to check it out. It was our first communication with some one who might be able to help. They said maybe today maybe tomorrow. Some time anyway we would get electricity. They didn't have any themselves at home so they knew what it was like.
Jim then went to try and find some ice. There was an ice shortage so we were just hoping for some, not expecting any, or maybe even something, anything cold to drink. While he was out a whole bunch of trucks pulled up. They were from the power company! We might be saved! AND they gave us cold water! Yeas! Icy cold water that had been sitting in ice!
I have a neighbor who is a well known professional female body builder and her husband, rode around on their scooter trying to get a crew to fix our electric. The head of the crew is a body builder so he noticed her. Low and behold, trying to flag them down works! Also, my neighbor Howard promised to do the cheer we do for them that he thought up last during the last form and taught us all. Geez we ha nothing to do....LOL
And they fixed the electricity! Ooooh it was so nice! I went to thank the cable guys and they were draining the ice run off from their cooler. And they let me put my feet in the icy cold water! OOOOHhhh it felt so good! And then they offered us sandwiches! How nice!
Anyway there were other trials and tribulations but nothing that didn't get taken care of....And all the gowns we were working on are safe and sound. They had been put into waterproof containers just in case but we stayed dry. Parts of the area did not. And some people still don't have electricity a week later, mostly the areas that were hardest hit.
But it all seems like a little silly dream now. The Gulf coast is in horrible shape. There is no where on the planet that is worse to be right now. We were sticky and hot and thirsty here and some people still are but nothing compares to the devastation of loosing an entire city. A city of great beauty. A costal area that is gone. It is almost beyond comprehension how small towns have completely disappeared. And these people must feel so hopeless. So anything you all can do, now or later to help them, any kindness that can be extended, please do it. They are going to need help for a very long time.
And horray! Fat Domino was found in New Orleans today!
