Always Dress Above Your Station

Renaissance Wedding Gown Gallery

During the Renaissance, wedding gowns were simply put, your very best dress. The gowns were intended to be worn again for other occasions, not just once, as in modern times. Some times wedding dresses were ones the bride already had, perhaps with new trim added, or different sleeves and underskirts might have been worn. Other times the renaissance wedding gowns were completely new, a wedding after all was as an good excuse for a new gown as it is today. However the new wedding gown, after it had been worn for the wedding, would become part of the bride's normal wardrobe.

Colours were chosen for various reasons, and one can be certain they were often chosen to flatter the bride. The style of a renaissance wedding gown itself would be whatever was current.

Colours for wedding gowns were some times chosen to compliment the "house" colours of a particular noble groom, practice that occurred particularly during the Italian renaissance. House colours typically coordinated with the heraldic coat of arms of noble family. Wearing the house colours would be a symbolic offer towards the bride to her husband, her gown showing that she would now become part of his house.
White in fact, was not a particularly popular colour until Queen Victoria wore a white gown to her own wedding.
There are recorded occasions where the guests at weddings were given clothing as gifts, sometimes the gowns were all of the same colours. One can only guess that "dad" had gotten a very good deal on fabric as long as he bought the same colour.

This is the sword cloak gallery. If you would like to inquire about having a custom renaissance sword cloak made for you please call us or email. We are happy to tailor to your exact specifications.

Working with Renaissance and Period Wedding Gowns and the Brides

We patiently consult with the bride to be on the style, colour, and trim detail of the wedding gowns. It is very good to plan well ahead for these gowns, so that the best possible choices can be made. On occasion there are brides who have very little time to plan their renaissance wedding gowns and we do our very best to accommodate them. What we won't do is use zippers...although Stimpzilla can sometimes be bribed to do anything with chocolates....Dark chocolates...Preferably truffles....

We do put our hearts and souls into these gowns. We understand just how important it is to have the perfect renaissance wedding gown. We will do our best during consultation to explain why certain styles and fabrics are good choices after hearing the details of the wedding. However we are happy to make the wedding gown styled the way you want. A custom wedding gown should be just as the bride wants it.

We want you to have a gown that will be comfortable for the duration of the ceremony and the reception. A renaissance wedding gown should be put on, and not have to be adjusted over and over again.

Ordering A Renaissance Bridal Gown

The process for ordering a custom gown usually begins with an email or a phone call. We do like to talk with the brides to get a sense of their personality so that we can design a wedding gown that suits her.

Fabric types and colours are agreed upon. A mock up of the bodice will be made if deemed necessary. Trim is finalized and then the sewing begins.

Please feel free to ask any questions that you may have!
